Morfovouni
|
Morfovouli is one of the biggest villages in the hilly Karditsa. It is built on the slopes of Agrafa mountains, in a 780 m. height.
Right in front of the village lies the Thessalic plain, while from the west side it is surrounded by a beautiful forest with chestnuts.
The village was originally named Vounesi. From 1994 Morfovouni is the head office of Nikolaos Plastiras municipality, which was named after the famous politician, the known “Black Cavalier”.
The residents of Morfovouni played a leading role to the War of Independence. The village suffered a lot of catastrophes during the Turkish rule and the Second World War. In 1943 the Italians burnt big part of the settlement, while after a while the Germans bombarded it. Morfovouni was the birthplace of Nikolaos Plastiras.
While being in Morfovouni, it is worth visiting the monastery of Trinity in Vounesi 2 km northeastwards of the settlement. According to an inscription, the monastery was built in 1858. The local tradition says that it was built at the place of a church from the 14th century. Today, this monastery is an important religious monument with remarkable architectural elements and anaglyphs.
Various cultural events are organized all year around. The Andamoma of Morfovouniotes is the most important of all. It is celebrated in the village since 1922, every Pentecost Sunday of the year.
