Rentina the Queen of Agrafa as the locals call it, is a beautiful traditional settlement, considered preservable. It is built amphitheatrically, 55 km from the town of Karditsa.
Rentina is one of the most beautiful regions in Thessaly. It combines modern with traditional architecture, the beautiful landscape with the rich historic past. All these together create a unique identity that makes it the capstone of Smokovo.
The houses are “hidden” from the street, resembling a castle. The most famous of these is the castle of Toulakoglou. The bright colours will impress you.
Rentina is famous for the revolutionary movement during the Turkish rule period.
During your visit in the region it is worth visiting the monastery of Dormition that dates back to the 9th century. The murals were painted in 1662.
Really impressive is the church of Saint George in the central square of Rentina. It was built during the 17th century and has an impressive chancel.
It is worth visiting the National Resistance museum hosted in an elementary’s school basement. The museum has many souvenirs and photos from the War. The same building also hosted the Army Officers’ School of ELAS during 1943 – 44.
