Fourna

Fourna is a mountainous municipality at the northwest part of Evritania prefecture. The region is verdurous of fir trees and forests. You will admire the endless natural beauties and the impressive historical monuments. These are the main reasons that made locals work with tourism attracting many visitors year after year.
Fourna is the capital of the homonym municipality and the most important village in the area. Built in a 850 m altitude, it offers spectacular view to the whole area. It is the first station to Evritania, through the valley of Fthiotida and the ravine of Paliokastro. According to the archaeological findings, the region is inhabited since prehistoric times. At the hill of Prophet Elia are found the remains of an ancient castle.
The current settlement was established during the period of the Turkish rule. During the 16th century many of the neighboring villages started selling their products to Italian and Jewish traders from Thessaly. It was then that Fourna started to thrive.
The Turkish used to call Fourna Kiostan or Kiosteni by the name Kiouhistan, which means capital. Fourna back then was the seat of the area’s kotzabasis (type of potentate during the period of the Turkish rule).
Visit the church of Transfiguration where important heirlooms are kept, the Serafimio Library and the ancient Monastery of Transfiguration in Vraha. It has unique murals and icons from the Byzantine period.
