THE CASTLE OF CHORA
|
The Venetian Castle is right above Chora settlement, as it is built on a rocky hill viewing to the picturesque port of Kapsali. Its construction started during after-Byzantine times and took its current feature in 1503.
The island’s head was transferred to Castro, after the catastrophe of Agios Demetrios in Paleochora by the Turkish pirate Barbarosa in 1537.
Inside the Castle you will see many Byzantine temples and structures. Among them distinguishes the imposing residence of the Venetian Intendant. Today the building hosts the Historic File of Kythira.
