Kythira town
|
The town of Kythira or Chora as the locals call their capital has all the characteristics of an authentic island state. It is located in the south part of the island and along with the graphic port of Kapsali create an idyllic picture.
Chora is built around the medieval castle, which is built on a rocky hill, dated from 1503. The town started to develop by Venetians during the 13th century and started to extend outside the castle walls from the 15th century. The old traditional settlement is characterized by elements of the Aegean architecture. Simplicity of style, narrow paths, arches, white-washed houses and flower pots with all kinds of flowers remind of the Aegean style.
If you take a stroll around the town you will be definitely impressed by the Byzantine churches. Inside the castle’s yard are saved remarkable Byzantine churches such as the church of Panagia Myrtidiotissa, of Saint John Theologist and of Pantokratoras. Don’t miss visiting the Archaeological Museum with an important collection of findings.
The capital of Kythira is not the most developed in tourism area of the island. It is ideal for a quiet staying. You can stay in the renovated Venetian mansions, turned into traditional guest houses. They are the ideal suggestion for romantic travelers. Right under Chora is created a natural port, with the settlement of Kapsali, the most developed tourist resort in the island.
