FOOTPATHS AT ANDROS
|
Andros has many ancient footpaths all around the island.
There are footpaths that follow the natural passes between mountains and gulches and connect lands of social and financial interest. Many of them are used even today by residents in order to visit small churches, and by stockbreeders. It is believed that these footpaths have remained the same since ancient times until today. And this is because the human possibility for technical works that ignores natural passes, was available after World War Two and in Andros during the last couple of years. The island’s main road network was constructed the last pre-war years and the first post-war years on the traces of older paths. But where do these footpaths lead? Everywhere! Every small church, monastery, grassland, cultivating land, found, beach, cove and of course every settlement have at least one footpath leading to them.
In these ancient cobblestone paths were based the social and financial life of the island from prehistoric times to the first post-war times.
Some of them have turned to advantage and are ideal for ambulatory routes.
Those of you wanting to know the real Andros, follow them!
