ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM PALEOPOLIS
|
The Archaeological Collection of Paleopolis was established in 2003. It is located in the homonym settlement, roofed under a building, subsidy of Goulandris’ Institution. The museum is dedicated to the antiquities of Paleopolis, giving emphasis to the classic city that was for 12 centuries (6th century BC-6th century AC) the island’s capital.
In the collections you will see findings from the 5th millenium to the 6th BC. Vessels, tools, jewels, statuettes, coins, etc. are some of the museum’s exhibits.
Highly impressive is the marble sculpture showing the winged Horse Pegasus with Vellerefonti. It was the point of a temple and it is dated from the end of the 6th century to the beginnings of the 5thBC. Distinguishes the marble lion in natural size, found in the cemetery of Paleopolis.
