THE VALLEY OF BUTTERFLIES

A truly rare kind of beauty for the island is the valley with butterflies. It is located 16km southwest of Rhodes. It is a valley of 6km length full of creeks, pines, platania, figs, colorful flowers and thousands of butterflies!
During summer period, butterflies inundate the region and are a pole of attraction for the island’s visitors. Simple tourists but also researchers and scientists come to enjoy and research this rare phenomenon.
That kind of butterfly also known as the butterfly of Rhodes, in the scientific language is called “Butterfly the tetragonoktistos” or in latin Panaxia Quandripuctaria. You will find them in thousands on the tree trunks, where they are looking for some cool, wetness and food.
In the valley there have been made small bridges, artificial lakes and streets to easy your tour around this unique place.
Close to the top of the valley is a historic monastery with important position in the latest history of Rhodes. This monastery is dedicated to Panagia Kalopetra and, as the tradition says, was built by Alexandros Ipsilantis after a miracle he experienced.
