Between Vitsi and Grammos it is situated the ancient Orestida. In the middle of the plain formed by the said mountains it is located the famous lake of Orestiada and on the peninsula penetrating to it, it is built the city of Kastoria. Kastoria is in a distance of 555 km. from Athens and 214 km. from Thessaloniki. The byzantine monuments and the churches give the town a sophisticated style. The city has more than 75 byzantine and of postbyzantine period churches dated from the 9th till the 19th century. The mansions, buildings of the 17th and 18th century, are of particular interest due to their architectural style and decoration. In the town you can visit the traditional settlements Doltso and Apozari, the Byzantine and Popular Art Museum, the Museum of Fur, the cavern of Drakos. From the town you can visit the two magnificent mountains Grammos and Vitsi and to camp in "Arrenes", the Lake settlement of Dispilio 7 km. southeastwards dated back to 5000 B.C., the Fossil Forest Nostimou, Mavrohori near the Lake, the wonderful traditional villages Aposkepo, Kleissoura, Nestorio, Vogatsiko. Going on a tour of the peninsula you will admire the fascinating landscape of the lake. In the middle of the road you will meet the Monastery of Panaghia Mavriotissa, where you can visit the church of Panaghia (Virgin Mary), the nave of the monastery and the chapel of St. John with marvellous wall paintings of the 11th century. If time permits it you can also visit the village Aposkepos to refresh yourselves in the icy waters flowing of the old stone fountains of the village and to admire the panoramic view from there. The tour of the Peninsula reaches again the town in the location of the Marine Club and the cafeterias situated in the area. If you wish to admire the view of Kastoria from high up, you can go up to Prophet Elias setting off from the square of Aghios Minas. One of the most important sports in the town it is considered to be the rowing, whereas there is also organised sailing center. The calm waters of the lake are ideal for sea-ski too.
