Nostimo is one of the oldest village’s in Kastoria. It is located at the southwest part of Kastoria and 27 km from the capital. It is built in an altitude of 950 m, in a magnificent place.
Nostimo attracts thousands of visitors due to the existence of a natural sight. It is the petrified forest, which was revealed accidentally in 1935. There were works of lignite extraction in the area, when thousands of animal and marine fossils came into light. It is estimated that they are from Tithi sea, which covered the Mediterranean countries 200 million years ago!
According to geologists the petrified forest was created about 15 – 20 million years ago and covered the whole village. There is a theory saying that the forest had tropical plants. Among the findings are saved tree trunks of 10 m height that impress every visitor.
These fossils are exhibited at the Elementray School of Nostimo. It is worth visiting it, as you will get important information for the region’s history.
In this exhibition, visitors will have the chance to see fossils of animals, corals, sea urchins, clams and shark bones. A new part is about to open with fossils from the petrified forest.
