Dispilio
|
This small village is 7 km from Kastoria, at the south part of Orestiada lake. It is a beautiful, picturesque village, named after a cave 500 m from the settlement.
Dispilio attracts many tourists every year due to the Lakeside Prehistoric settlement that was discovered in the area. According to the findings, the settlement dates back to the Neolithic Age (6000 – 3000 BC) and gives important information about that era. The first findings came into light in 1632 after a long period of drought. For the scientists this is a good proof that people back then built their houses on pegs. It is estimated that more than 5.000 people that lived in this settlement had to leave their residences due to the bad weather or financial condiions.
The archaeological excavations have brought into light many findings, such as hooks, household appliances, wooden boats and ceramics. Most important of all is a wooden plaque with linear inscriptions, not yet unscrambled.
The visitor has now the chance to see a restoration of the prehistoric settlement with huts made of branches and mud.
