CATACOMBS

Catacombs of Milos' are among the most important findings of the first Christian times. They were found in 1844 and are dated at the end of the 1st century. Along with roman catacombs, they are the most significant paleochristianic cemeteries and places of worship during the persecutions of christians. Milos' catacombs were in use until the 5th century. It is a complex of three catacombs. Underground hallways smaller and bigger ratify and end in a death chamber. The hallways have a length of 200m. In its' sides are carved graves or arkosolia with five or seven dead people found in them. Graves were found in the floor of the hallways. Many of them were decorated with natural jewels and symbolic schema. It is estimated that in theses catacombs were buried over 2000 christians.
Catacombs apart from its use as a cemetery were also used as places of worship during persecution times. Milos' catacombs show how early was christianity spread in the island.
Today only part of the arcades can be visited. Tour around the catacombs fills the visitor with awe.
