KATAVOTHRES
|
Katavothres is a rare and very interesting geological phenomenon, which for centuries stayed unexplained.
Katavothres or Thalassomili are 2,5km from Argostoli. They are underground tunnels, in which marine waters enter. These tunnels pass under the bottom of the sea, the mountains of Kefalonia and end in the East part of the island.
The first one to observe this phenomenon was the English Stewens, who was impressed and created mills in the spots where cracks begin. During the 1867 earthquakes, the geologist Miliaresis studied the influence of these concussions to this strange phenomenon and discovered that the mills continued to operate.
But during the 1953 earthquakes, there was no change to the flow of the sea and the function of mills.
Through all those years, many scientist tried to explain this phenomenon. Finally in 1963, a systematic research by an Australian geologic team helped to the comprehension of this phenomenon.
