Kefalonia is characterized as the island of mysteries. And this is why strange things happen to Kefalonia that science cannot explain.
One of the most known is the appearance of agiofida every August. This phenomenon is observed in Markopoulos village. On the remains of the bell tower of the church dedicated to Panagia, appear every year on the 6th of August small snakes, which fill the interior. Those snakes are completely harmless and non-poisonous. People take them in their hands and observe them. Characteristic of these snakes is the crossword on their heads.
During these days, 6 – 15 of August, worshippers that spend their holidays in the island, go and see the snakes of Panagia.
Explanation of the mystery
According to the natural explanation of this phenomenon, this is a rare kind of snakes, reproduced in this area. The climate, the land and people’s behavior are foster their reproduction. So the appearance and disappearance has to do with the time of reproduction. The phenomenon is attributed to the strong sound of the church bell that disturbs snakes and makes them come out of their nests.
