LOCAL PRODUCTS
Kefalonia, the biggest of Ionian islands distinguishes for its fertile ground. The endless olive groves you will see, give the island natural beauty and fine products.
Wine, oil, honey and cheeses are the most known as and the local sweets (mantoles and pastelia) that distinguish for their unique taste, are made from pure local products.

WINE
Viniculture has an age-long history in Kefalonia. Its roots go back centuries and become legendary, since according to tradition, Kefalos, the son of Hermes and Ersi, cultivated the first grapevine in the island. He inhabited the island from the time it was named Athinea land in order to remember his origins.
At all historic times, viniculture was an important factor to the island’s economy.
The climatic conditions and the variety of grapevines foster the production of fine quality wines. Labels like Robola, Thiniatiko, Moschato, Vostilidi and Tsaousi distinguish for their unique taste. The vineyard of Kefalonia extends to the hilly regions of the island, in a ground of 12.000sq.m. It has many varieties, penthouse lands and a low production, especially for Robola with 350 – 600kilos per sq.m.

ROBOLA IN KEFALONIA
Kefalonia is the only among Ionian island that has a zone Provenance denomination of Fine Quality, with the name “Robola of Kefalonia”.
The zone of Robola covers a ground of 3500sq.m. until the boundaries of Enos Park in Kefalonia. Robolas’ grapevines come literally out of the rocks, this is why Venetians call this wine Vino di dasso, which means wine from the rock. Robolas’ grapes have a white blond colour, are round with a thin peel.
Robola is a white wine with golden glinds, according to the method of wine production. Robola has the smell of citrus fruits and peach, citrus and apple, with satisfying fragrance endurance. It is very cool and has to be drunk two years after production date. It is served under 12Kelsius degrees.

OIL
Another famous product of Kefalonia is oil. From the island’s vineyards is produced fine quality oil. The composition of the ground and especially the climatic conditions, create the perfect conditions for the development of olives
The island’s oil distinguishes for the unique quality and taste. The production of olive oil is a traditional in Kefalonia and is transferred from generation to generation. Cultivation of olive trees, the collection of olive as and the production of oil are still done according to the traditional way that only Kefalonites know how.
In Kefalonia are produced three different types of olive oil:
a) extra pure olive oil, with 1% acidity, with no use of chemicals.
b) pure olive oil from oil pasta and c) olive oil, from the distillation of paste and its mixture with pure oil.

HONEY
While staying in Kefalonia it is worth tasting and buy the local pure honey as and the honey from Elati. These are two different kinds of honey, fostered by the climate conditions.
Thymarisio honey is aromatic and really tasty. It is blond and one of the best products of our country.
Also the honey from Elati is one of the best at its kind. You can find it almost always in fluidic form.
Honey is a natural biologic product that allows no elaboration. It has at least 180 different substances connected in such a way that no one until now could make it technically.

DAIRY PRODUCTS
The traditional cheese of Kefalonia is feta. Cheese producers praise that they started the expansion of producing cheese to all Greece. The famous white soft or hard cheese with the characteristic smell takes about two months to grow. They used to make it from billy milk or from the combination of billy and goat milk. Today feta is made with pasteurized milk and is salty.
Feta is part of the greek diet and it is one of the products with protected origin denomination. It is found in barrels or standardized. It is consumed as a table cheese and as an ingredient in many recipes. Cheese pies, spinach pies, saganaki, etc.

TRADITIONAL SWEETS
Mantoles : a local sweet of Kefalonia made by almond, sugar and vegetal red colour. It is sold in boxes of various sizes or open in the candy stores all over the island.
Mantolato: local sweet made with sugar, eggs, honey, fine-cut almonds, farina syrup and vanilla. Distinguishes for its unique taste and it is sold in different size packs.
Pastelia: Distinguishes because it is produced from fine quality local honey and sesame. You can find it in all candy stores with traditional products, in various packs.
