THE FORTRESS OF SAINT GEORGE
|
The fortress of Saint George is built on a hill south of Argostoli and right above Peratata village. It is of polygonal shape in a ground of 16.000sq.m. It is combined from the exterior wall, the interior yard and a rocky top, almost in the center of the yard. There you will also see the remains of the so-called Old Fortress.
The construction of the fortress began probably during 12th century. Its exterior walls saved until our days were built in 1504 by Venetians.
At the time of the castle’s bloom, there were public buildings in the inside, residences, temples, food storehouses, barracks, hospitals, prisons and water tanks. Today are only saved the remains of a bridge from French possession’s time, which united the battlements.
In the fortress’s yard, close to a small square you will see the remains of the Catholic church of Saint Nikolaos. The 1953 earthquakes caused severe catastrophes.
The fortress used to be the capital of Kefalonia until 1757, when Argostoli became the new capital.
