Olympos
|
A visit to village Olympos or Elympos, as the locals call it, can be a really special experience. Here time has leaved everything untouched. For centuries it has showed respect to the beauty of this land and to the unique creations of island architecture that have turned the village into a live folklore museum.
Olympos is located in the northest part of the island. The village is built in a hilly and isolated region. Due to this location, residents kept the feature untouched as and their traditions. It is characteristic that even today most of residents are dressed with the local apparels and speak the local dialect – pretty inapprehensible for visitors – which still maintains many doric elements.
This village was built 5 centuries ago when a severe earthquake destroyed the coastal town Vrikounda. Vrikounda flourished during classic times and was one of the biggest and most powerful in Karpathos.
During the last years more and more tourists visit the village. Greeks and foreigners charmed by its uniqueness walk in its narrow paths, talk with the locals and try to live this mysterious atmosphere.
Apart from the old, well-kept houses, the graphic stone mills and old churches will impress you. Like that of Panagias dated from the 16th, of Saint Onoufrios and of Panagias Chrisovalandou.
