KARLOVASI
 |
Karlovasi is the second largest town in Samos, situated on the northwestern coast of the island. It is a place with a distinct identity, seamlessly blending its rich 19th-century industrial history with the vibrant energy of a modern university community, as it hosts the School of Science of the University of the Aegean. The town is divided into five districts (Old, New, Middle Karlovasi, Ormos, and the Harbor), each possessing its own unique charm and character.
The hallmark of the town is the imposing tabakika (the old tanneries) and the grand mansions of the era's merchants, which bear witness to the period when Karlovasi was a major center for leather processing and export. Today, many of these industrial buildings have been restored, giving the Ormos area the feel of a unique open-air museum. In New Karlovasi, which serves as the commercial hub, the wide streets, numerous student hangouts, cafes, and shops keep the town lively throughout the entire year. For nature and adventure enthusiasts, Karlovasi offers direct access to some of the island's most stunning landscapes. Just a short distance away lies the lush Potami area with its famous waterfalls, where visitors can hike through a dense forest of plane trees, as well as the pristine, secluded beaches of Mikro and Megalo Seitani. Karlovasi is a destination that captivates travelers with its grand architecture, historical heritage, and youthful spirit.
