Iraion
 |
One of the most famous areas of Samos. According to mythology, the goddess Hera was born here, and she was worshiped here, as evidenced by the ruins of the famous ancient temple dedicated to her.
It is located 8 km from Pythagoreio. The seaside settlement is considered one of the most beautiful on the island. Its ancient history and the architectural layout of the village, which remains faithful to the traditional island style, create a nostalgic atmosphere that enchants every visitor.
The area¢s port – without a doubt – is the archaeological site. The remains of the Temple of Hera testify to the existence of a magnificent building and confirm Herodotus¢ assessment, who described the sanctuary of Hera as the largest in Greece and one of the most important of its time.
It is a two-story Ionic temple, founded during the rule of the tyrant Polycrates, 538–522 BC. Its cella and pronaos remain almost unchanged. It is estimated to have had 155 columns, which varied in four different sizes and types. The temple¢s large altar, dating from 560 BC, is particularly impressive.
Another remarkable monument is the Sacred Way, the road that led from the city of Samos to the sanctuary. It is 5 km long, and on both sides stood significant buildings that highlighted the importance of the site. Excavations have uncovered important artifacts, now displayed in the island¢s archaeological museum.
The Heraion also attracts sea lovers, as it features a beautiful beach. It has both pebbled and sandy areas. It is an organized beach offering visitors all modern amenities and opportunities for water sports.
