GREECE / DODECANESE / KALYMNOS / KALYMNOS TOWN
Kalymnos town
Kalymnos town or Pothia is the capital and the island’s port. It is considered as one of the most important ports in the islands of Greece and one of the most beautiful and graphic capitals of Dodecanese.
In the island’s port the mermaid statue welcomes visitors and promises unforgettable vacation. A promise that can be easily become true as the island offers various options. Pothia is built in an amphitheatric way in the banks of a rocky mountain. Houses are painted with vivid colours. Most of them are of neoclassic style, while there are some of Venetian architecture built by Italians during 1930 – 35. Among them distinguish the eparchy and the Town Hall Edifice.
The heart of the town beats around the port. Sponges – the island’s traditional product – have a leading role in the market. Graphic pedlars, diving suits and workshops of sponge elaboration are all around the island. Pothia is a beautiful town that combines traditional elements with modern comforts.
While touring around the town you will see some of the most important sites of the island. Almost in the center of the coastal road is the Cathedral church of Sotiros Christ. Highly impressive is the marble chancel screen made by the famous sculpture from Tinos, Giannoulis Halepas.
In location Damos you will see the remains of the ancient town and the ancient cemetery with, carved in the rocks, graves.
In the foothill of mountain Flaskias and very close to the town is the famous cave of Nymphs or Seven Parthenes. Its name is due to the seven young virgins who, according to tradition, took refuge in it, in order to escape pirates, but unfortunately got lost in it. Findings brought into light show that during ancient times, the cave was used as a place of worship.
In the region you will also see the remains of Hrisoheras’ venetian castle, which was built on the remains of a previous byzantine castle. Inside the castle walls is the church of Panagia Hrisohera. Worth visiting are the town’s museums. The Archaeological museum is in the neighborhood of Trinity roofed under a neoclassic building.
The museum hosts findings from neolithic Age to roman. In the Naval museum you will see mostly exhibits from the life of sponge divers and of Kalymnos’ customs.
In Pothia you will swim in the beaches Gefira and Therma, famous for their clear waters. These beaches are organized and provide the possibility for water sports and games.
From the port you can take a boat and tour around the island. You will have the chance to see unique beauties and dreamy beaches. You can also visit the small islands of Telendos and Pserimos.
Kalymnos capital is famous for its tourist infrastructures. Hotels, complexes of rooms to let, restaurants, bars, clubs with live music, cool cinemas and cultural events, all create the ideal conditions for perfect vacations.
