Chorio
|
Chorio or Chora was for centuries the island’s capital. It is 3km from Pothia and it is located in the west part of the new capital. Residents of Chorio stay true to traditions and customs.
In the region you will see some of the most important sites in Kalymnos. On the hill, right of the village, is Pera Kastro built in Byzantine times and was inhabited until 18th century.
Another important site in the region is the church of Panagia dedicated to Dormation. The old Cathedral distinguishes or its wooden chancel screen and it is very important to the island. In that church was raised the Greek Flag in 1948 that signaled the coalition of Kalymnos with Greece.
Near the village you will see the remains of Kalidneos’ Apollo ancient temple dated from Hellenistic times. Many architectonic members of the temple were used in the construction of Christ’s church in Jerusalem built by Saint Helen.
