Stafylos
|
Stafylos is one of the most famous beaches in the island. In the region around it is one of the most important archaeological sites in Skopelos.
The cove of Stafylos is 4km from Chora. It is one of the locals’ favorite beaches, which has turned into a cosmopolitan shore, a pole of attraction for tourists. This golden beach is ideal for swimming, water sports and games. It is protected from the winds with crystal clear waters. In the arms of a piny cove it is everyone’s summer dream.
At the south end of it, highly impressive is the small rocky peninsula, connected to the shore through a strip of land like a neck, of 10m height. One part of it has a forest, while the other just a bare, abrupt rock. Right behind this rock is the hidden and idyllic beach of Valaniou.
On this peninsula were found the remains of an ancient structure, probably the palace of legendary Stafylos, the first settler and king of Skopelos, sent to the island by Minoan. His relation to Crete is also shown by the items found inside the royal grave of Stafylos, dated from the 16th century. Among them distinguish: golden jewels, vessels and a royal sword with golden decoration.
