Glossa
|
Glossa is one of the biggest in extend villages of Skopelos and the second in size. It is located in the southwest part of the island, 25km from Chora. It is built on the mountain slope and has a wonderful view to the forest and the sea.
The village was originally named Platana due to the many planes the region has. Houses and public buildings are influenced by Macedonian architectonic tradition, with wooden balconies, roofs and tiles.
Worth visiting is the settlement of Loutraki, where you can swim in its beautiful beach or take a walk around it. A kilometer away from the settlement of Glossa is the Byzantine monastery of Taxiarchs, part of Agio Oros. East of Glossa, on a gigantic rock is built the small church of Saint John. In order to reach it you have to climb up the 104 stairs carved into the rock. The view from up there is magnificent. Don’t miss attending “Louizia”, organized in August by the Cultural Union of Glossa. The celebrations are dedicated to the composer Manos Loizos, who used to spend his summers in this region.
