Chora or Mesaria, the island’s capital, is built in an amphitheatrical way in the banks of a hill.
It was built during the 17th century and is inhabited since then. The colour of Cyclades islands and the authentic atmosphere impress every visitor.
Touring in the settlement will fill you with unique pictures. White houses, cobblestone pavements painted with icons from life in the island, small churches and mills create a perfect scenery.
It is worth visiting the churches that distinguish for their architecture and rich interior. Among them are the church of Agios Savas dated from 1613 and has the blazon of A. Gozadinos, the church of Sotiras with a chancel screen of the 17th century and the church of Trinity, the oldest in the island. Don’t miss visiting the monastery of Panagia Nikous, built in a beautiful location. In the basement of the monastery used to function a clandestine school, while you will see the epitaph of Panagia.
Northeast of Chora you will see the Aeolian Park, where electric power is being produced by the power of wind. It is the first Aeolian station in Greece.
From Chora you can reach the beaches of Agios Stefanos and Livadaki. There are rooms to let. In the taverns of the region taste the local cuisine and the local wine. As for dessert try the traditional amigdalota.
Buy souvenir from tourist shops in Chora. Prefer the handmade ceramics and decorative shells.
