ABOUT IOANNINA
|
63 km. northwards of Ioannina, in an altitude of 630 m., built amphitheatrically in the hillsides of Trapezitsa it is situated Konitsa with the river Aoos streaming down its ‘feet’.
Reaching the small town it is worthwhile to walk in the uphill narrow streets of old Konitsa and the famous stone built mansion of Hamko, mother of Ali-pasha, or to go down towards the river to admire the impressive one-arch bridge.
You can also visit the Environmental Faculty Centre, the Popular Art Museum, the mausoleum near the small forest, the chapel of St. Barbara from where the view is unlimited as far as Albania, the byzantine monastery of Stomio as well. Following the road for the Greek-albanian frontiers you will reach the property Bourzani. Here, in the banks of the river Aoos, in an immense groundland 1500 quarters of an acre it has been created the unique in Greece Park of Savage Life with deers, boars and wild sheep. In the same place there is an environmental training centre. You may visit the park all the year through. Observation of wild animals is done under the surveyance of responsible escorts.
We suggest that you have lunch in the hotel Bouratzani and from there (5 km.) to set off for the monastery of Molyvdoskepasti that is internally decorated with wall paintings of the 16 and 17th century. It is the oldest monastery of Epirus, built by the emperor Constantine Pogonatos (668-685 A.D.)
The village Molyvdoskepasto is the farthest settlement of Konitsa with many byzantine monuments, a traditional workshop-exhibition centre of production of raki and observatory of the Greek-Albanian frontiers. North of Konitsa they are situated the famous villages Pyrsogianni and Vourbiani with the well-known technicians who for centuries were carving the stone building churches, mansions and bridges all over Greece.
