The famous ravine of Vikos is one of the biggest and deepest in the world. It is particularly impressive, with vertical geological shaping, charming enormous variety and alternation of ecosystems, amazing flora and fauna and constitutes one of the few remaining shelters of wild life in Europe.
It is found in the North-west of Timfis, in western utmost of the National Forest Vikos - Aoos and crosses the Central and Western Zagori. It has a length of 24 km, a medium depth of 900 m. (in certain points it also touches upon the 1200 m.) and width that oscillates between the 100 and 1000 m. Its beginning is found near the village Tsepelovo and its end behind the village Vikos, in the bridge of Aristi. Its initial department, a particularly narrow gorge, is named Vikaki, while its branches are gorges Mega - Lakkos and the Mezarja.
The ravine flows through the river Voidomatis (in the region it is also called Vikos and gives his name in the ravine), that has water only seasonally. The gorge is aqueous creation and its rock is calcareous, with impressive shaping and layers of flysh.
The flora of Vikos is of the richest and includes more than 1700 types, while its important element constitutes the fact that in the region reside plants that we do not meet nowhere elsewhere in the world. Vegetation with willow trees, plane trees, maple trees, herbs and wild flowers, is interchanged with the grey vertical, huge rocks.
The historical fame of Vikos for the value of its flora is also owed to its herbs and pharmaceutical plants, the therapeutic attributes of which were known from the old years. Practical doctors, called Vikodoctors, gathered these herbs and prepared medicines for various diseases. The fauna of the ravine is also rich.
In the region we meet almost all the rare mammals, reptiles and birds of the mountainous area that are in danger of extinction. Wild goat, roedeers, hares, seldom amphibian and insects, that live in its slopes, while golden eagles, rock partridges woodpeckers and falcons tear the sky with their wings.
The crossing of the ravine is considered one of the most popular mountaineering ways in Europe. Strong walkers can cross the gorge through signalled paths and closely learn its greatness and the astonishing beauty of its landscapes. The access is usually done by the villages Papigo, Vikos, Monodendri and Koukouli, from where paths begin that lead to the gorge.
