In the northern department of the prefecture, in the foot of Trapezitsa, there where the ridges round, they become softer and meet whispering with the hot plain and the snaky flow of the river Awoou, is built Konitsa. It is a historical border city, with its own dynamics, that maintains its graphic charm, while simultaneously it offers modern comforts. It is a productive region and it constitutes an exceptional tourist centre from which the visitor can explore this magical place.

The combination of the diversity of bas-relief, of the special geological shaping, the interesting natural landscapes and the monuments of the architectural heritage that are found scattered in the settlements of the region, charm the traveller with the first glance. The exploration of small landscapes in the forests, the hypoalpic area and the rivers and the search of the abandoned villages give information on the nature and the history and offer unforgettable experiences. The wider region, especially the villages of the northern department, are homeland of famous craftsmen of stone, but also artists (religion painters, wood sculptors e.t.c.), that have constructed brilliant buildings in all the Balkan area.

Through the slopes of Timfis and Smolikas unfolds the eminent Aoos that links the National Forest Vikos-Aoos and Valia-Kalnta. Its intense upright partition, its mountainous landscapes and the unique wealth of its biotopes with a number of rare plants and wild animals, lends to it a unique beauty.

The access is done from a path near the old famous bridge of Konitsa, the crossing of which constitutes a challenge for the bolds. The Lacquer is found on the historical passage to Macedonia that is why its villages elected a particular local culture, with characteristics from both the regions.

In the Aoos they become descents, rafting and kayak, crossing dark forests and impressive passages that make adrenaline strike in red, while Voidomatis is offered for the beginners. Unique are also the possibilities for mountaineering, walk, and mountain biking, and riding.

In the North-west of the region, in a magical natural environment there are the mineral spa of Kavasillon and Amarath that are advisable for a wide spectrum of diseases, for those who want to combine the relaxation with the therapeutic tourism. Local specialties that include among the other traditional pies, jams, hunting etc, they leave the visitor the better impressions, while a big number of traditional hotels and guest houses ensure a pleasant staying.
