Although Paxoi are a small island, they have a long history. In general, the island had a common historic route to Corfu.
According to mythology, the island is a creation of Poseidon, the god of sea. As tradition says, Poseidon cut with his trident part of Corfu and created Paxous. His love refuge with Amphitriti. But Poseidon lost his trident, which was found by the residents of Paxoi and made it their emblem.
As for the word’s etymology, according to Stravona it comes from the Phoenician word “PAKS”, which means geometrical trapezium, island with a trapezium shape.
Phoenics were the first to settle in the island.
Ancient authors report the island’s participation to the sea battles of Corfiats with Corinthians in 229BC.
In 31BC Oktavianos and Antonio, along with Cleopatra came to Paxous and made the sea battle of Aktio. It is said that Paxoi were the love refuge for Antonio and Cleopatra.
At the beginnings of the 13th century, Paxoi come to the hands of Andigavgi. In 1386, Venetians conquer the island and keep it for almost four centuries. During this period was built the castle of Saint Nikolaos with the homonym church. At the same time people started to cultivate olives, which until our days is the main product supporting Paxos’ economy.
In 1537, Venetians submerge Turkish ships right outside Paxous. Barbarossa wanted to take revenge. After laying siege to Corfu with no success, he went to Paxous and plundered the whole island.
In 1797, after 411years of control, Venetians give the administration of the island over to French.
In 1814 Paxoi come to English hands.
In 1821, residents of Paxoi participate to the Greek Revolution and offer their services at the struggle for freedom
In 1863 Ionian Islands are united to Greece.
In 1922, many refugees from Asia Minor go to Paxous. During the Second World War, oil trade saved people from hunger.
Paxoi have developed in tourist infrastructures and are considered one of the most cosmopolitan Ionian islands. Thousands of visitors come to the island every year to enjoy the sun, the sea and the green nature.
