Gaios
|
Gaios is the capital and port of Paxoi. According to tradition it was named after Apostle Paul’s student who talked about Christianity to the residents of Paxoi.
The graphic settlement is built inside a safe cove. The dense vegetation, deep blue Ionian waters and traditional architecture make it look like an art picture.
In Gaios port you will see the two green islands of Agios Nikolaos and Panagia, that create an impressive Fiord. Through this Fiord pass boats and anchor in the jetty. A monastery dedicated to Panagia is on the homonym island. While in the island of Agios Nikolaos you will see a Venetian castle, dated from 1423, one of the most famous sites in the island.
Take a walk in Gaios cobblestone paths and admire the picturesque neighborhoods. Houses are still keeping the traditional Ionian architecture. While along the coastal road you will see mansions of neoclassic style. Painted in pink and blue colours, remind of old, romantic times.
Very close to the port you will see the historic part of the island and the church of Saints Apostles.
While staying in Gaio, don’t miss visiting the museum of Paxoi, which exhibits the island’s history.
The lovers of swimming will love Paxous. Beaches are every bather’s dream. Starting from Gaio, you can easily approach beaches: Gianna, Soulalena, Kloni Gouli, Kamini and Kaki Lagada. You can also take a boat and visit the islands of Panagia and Agios Nikolaos. When the night spreads its vales, dine in the restaurants along the coast. Drink your coffee at the cafés near the port enjoying the view. Later on you can dance in greek and foreign rhythms in the bars of the region.
