Paramythia is a town with a distinct traditional Epirotic character. It is located 37 km from Igoumenitsa and is the second-largest town in the region of Thesprotia. The town is built at an altitude of 750 meters, at the foot of Mount Gorila, nestled between two historic rivers, the Acheron and the Kalamas.
Paramythia serves as the seat of the municipality of the same name, which includes 22 municipal districts. The Paramythia Valley is one of the largest in Thesprotia and represents the most significant residential and cultural area in Epirus.
The town derives its modern name from the Virgin Mary of Paramythia (the Comforter) and the exceptional 14th-century Byzantine church in the area, which is one of the town’s main attractions. In the past, the town was known as Agios Donatos. Paramythia is built on the site of the ancient city of Euroia, which was destroyed by the Goths in 551 AD.
During your visit to Paramythia, be sure to explore the Byzantine Baths, the Koulia Castle, the Castle of Paramythia, and the Castle of Elea. A stroll through the town center is unforgettable, where you can admire the impressive traditional architecture and wander through the charming paved market streets.
Paramythia offers a range of accommodations, and the local taverns serve unique dishes of the traditional Epirotic cuisine, making it a perfect destination to experience both culture and gastronomy.
