CHURCH EVAGGELISTRIAS
The grandiose church of Panagia of Tinos was built in 1823. It was built in the same spot that the icon of Theotokos was found, according to the vision of Saint Pelagia.
It is a brilliant construction made of white marble and it's the first remarkable monument of the emancipated Greek Union.
Entering the church from the main entrance, on the left side, the visitor sees the iconostasis with the thaumaturge icon of Panagia, full of oblations.
Right under the grandiose central church is the church of Evresis dedicated to Zoodohos Pigi.
The church is constructed on the remains of the paleochristianic church, dedicated to Saint Ioannis. In the same location was the ancient temple of Dionysos.
Very close to Evresis' temple entrance is located the Mausoleum of "Ellis". It is the cruiser torpedoed in Tinos' port in 1940 by an italian submarine. It was in the island to pay the honors in the feast of Dekapentavgoustos. Inside the mausoleum are kept the bones of the first victims from the World War One, part of the torpedo and items from the ship.
The outside of the church is settled with pebbles of excellent folklore art made in 1833.
The church of Megaloharis with the buildings around it combine the Sacred Institution of Evagelistrias that has broad social and religious aims that add to the island's development.
The helping buildings of the church host: the museum of artists from Tinos, the Picture Gallery, the collection with ecclesiastic heirlooms, the ambry, the employees' offices and the file of Evagelistrias institution.

THE VISION OF SAINT PELAGIA
In July 9th 1822, came to Saint Pelagia's sleep a woman with a glorious dress and beautiful figure that told her:" Go to the churchwarden of the Monastery Stamatelo Kagadi and tell him to dig in the land of Antonios Doxaras in order to find my house and built my church".
Pelagia, frightened as she was, couldn't say if that was god sent or just a dream, so she hid it from everyone and went on with her ascetic life.
But the dream occurred again in July 23rd, when the same glowing woman figure, appeared in her sleep. When Pelagia asked who she was, she answered "Make land of great joy".
After this, the nun did as Panagia told her. The works for the construction of the temple, that now is named Evresi, started with helping from all the residents of the island.

THE FINDING OF THE ICON
The icon of Annunciation was found in January 30th 1823, during the works for the flagging of the church.
Its style doesn't belong to byzantine times, but in the first christian times. Everyone who researched for the icon's origin came to the conclusion that it's a piece of Revelationist Lukas and one of his first icons. Its thaumaturgy character is ascribed to it as Theotokos herself blessed this work.
After the finding of the icon it was decided to built a new bigger church dedicated to Annunciation.
