ABOUT RHODES

Rhodes had particular flourishing in the 4th B.C. century, when the famous Colossus was set in the island. Rhodes was a dominating political and military force during the 3rd and 2nd B.C. century. In 1309 they were established in the island the Knights of St.John and the island had great economical development and achieved great accomplishments in arts and culture. In 1522 it was conquered by the Turks and in 1912 by the Italians. It was integrated to Greece in 1948.
The island of the sun, as it is known, is the biggest island of Dodecanese with an extent of 1.398 sq.km. and it is in a distance of 250 n.m. (14 hours approx.) from Piraeus.
The capital Rhodes is situated at the northern part of the island. The ancient city was founded in 408 B.C. based on designs made by Ippodamos of Militos. The today’s capital consists of the Old City with middle-age walls and the newly constructed broad roads, fine buildings and a lot of shops.
The Old City is divided into two unequal parts, Kollakio that was smaller and Hora or Bourgo that was bigger. Kollakio is crossed by the road of the Knights. In both sides of the road there are located the motels of the seven nationalities consisting the class of the knights. At the end of the road it is situated the palace of the Great Magister, a building of the 14th century, in which a collection of furnitures of the 16th and 17th century is housed and mosaic flooring of the Roman period from the island Kos. In the Hospital of the Knights today the Archaeological Museum is housed with magnificent exhibits.
In the splendid buildings built during the Italian occupation of the island by the Italians today are housed the Prefecture Offices, the Law-Courts, Post-office, Harbour, Town Hall and the National Theater. Next to the theater there is the mosque of Mourat Reis and further the marine club.
Very near there is the hill of St.Stefanos with the temple of the Pythian Apollo, while in the other side of the city you will meet the park Rodini.
All the island has a lot of interesting locations. The valley with the butterflies, Filerimos with its monastery of Panaghia (Virgin Mary), the ruins of the ancient city Ialyssos, Kameiros, Afantou, Faliraki.
50 km. to the south-eastern side of the city of Rhodes there is the mythical Lindos with ancient acropole in a unique rocky formation as well as the ruins of the sanctuary dedicated to Lindia Athena (4th B.C.century) On a solid rock it is carved the ancient trireme symbol of the commercial and naval force of Lindos spreading in all the Mediterranesn sea. Below the hill they are found the white houses of the newly found settlement
