ACIENT TONW OF KAMIROS
|
Kamiros is one of the three ancient towns in Rhodes.
It is located in the northwest part of the island close to the gulf of Agios Minas. It is built according to the system of Ippodamos in three levels, including the acropolis over the hill, the settlement in a second level and a bit lower the Hellenistic temple, the Doric fountain, the market and the yard. The temple in acropolis is of Doric style. The hellenistic arcade, with two rows of doric style pillars, has underneath an irrigative system.
This remarkable system from the hellenistic times includes wells, underground tanks and irrigative tubes made of clay. The settlement of the hellenistic and roman period was structured in residential squares, having as characteristic in the residences atriums (indoor yards with pillars).
