Ios will stay unforgettable in your minds for the gastronomic pleasure it offers. Its traditional products distinguish for their quality and excellent taste.
Don't miss to taste Ios' cheeses. The island has a developed animal husbandry (mostly sheeps and cattle) that contribute to the production of dairy products and cheeses. One of the known cheeses in Ios is white Kefalotiri that is salty and spicy. Another very soft and acid cheese is skotiri a mixture of mizithra and other aromatics (it tastes like kopanisti cheese of Mykonos) and of course sweet mizithra.
Ios has a developed agriculture and produces mostly thymarisio honey that you must taste.
Ios has a wide variety of traditional sweets. Among them distinguish pasteli made from the local thimarisio honey and sesame, xerotigana (the local name for diples), kalasounia that are fried bites made of leaves filled with sweet mizithra, eggs and sugar. Don't hesitate to taste amigdalota the traditional sweet of Cyclades islands. They are made from detrited amigdalopsiha, eggs, sugar and anthonero.
Ios' cuisine is based on olive oil, legumes, vegetables, fish and meat. In the island's taverns and restaurants you will taste traditional recipes.
Try revithokeftedes, tomatokeftedes and tsimetia (filled kolokithokorfades). Other characteristic recipes of the local cuisine are sun-cared marides and the local meats that distinguish for their flavour.
