While touring around the island you will be impressed by the many churches. In the valleys, the hills and the villages, everywhere you will find a church. There are 365 churches on the whole. Each one of them tries to capture your attention. One for its baronial shape, other for its rich interior decoration and other for its beautiful location.
The style in most churches is "basilica with a cupola". It is the most common style in Christian East and West from the times of Great Constantine to the times of Ioustinianos.
All churches in Chora have a marble cross but the churches in villages have one made of stone.
It is worth visiting as many churches as you can. Most special of them that distinguish for their architecture are those of Saint Irini in the port, Saint George's in Gialo, Panagia's Gremiotissas in Chora, Saint Ioanni's in village Kalamos and Saint Ioanni's in Pyrgos that is said to be built on the remains of Apollo's ancient temple.
During the afterbyzantine times started to built churches with one arch, simple, flat or dome-shaped for more durability. Many of those churches are characterized as historic monuments of the afterbyzantine times.
