VENETIAN HARBOR OF CHANIA

The Venetian Harbor of Chania is a true jewel of the city and impresses all its visitors. It was constructed by the Venetians to protect the city from pirate raids. It is said that its construction, which began around 1320, lasted for approximately 300 years.

Around 1526, the Venetians began expanding the existing shipyards (Neoria), which served as storage facilities and ship repair workshops. Of the original 17 shipyards, only 7 survive today, and they are now used as venues for various cultural events and exhibitions.

The Venetian Harbor has lost much of its former glory. Today, it is mainly used by fishing boats and small vessels. Along the waterfront, visitors can find numerous cafés, restaurants, and entertainment venues.

THE HARBOR LIGHTHOUSE

The lighthouse was built by the Venetians in 1570. It can be reached via a narrow pathway on the eastern side of the harbor.

It is considered one of the city's landmarks and creates a particularly romantic and nostalgic atmosphere. The view from the lighthouse is spectacular, offering visitors unforgettable panoramic views and excellent photographic opportunities.

FIRKAS FORTRESS

Firkas Fortress is located on the western side of the harbor and was built during the Ottoman period to protect the entrance to the port. The fortress served as the headquarters of the city's military commander.

During both the Ottoman era and more recent times, Firkas Fortress was used as a military barracks and prison. Its underground chambers housed prisoners involved in Crete's liberation struggles, as well as detainees during the German occupation.

On December 1, 1913, the flag symbolizing the Union of Crete with Greece was raised at the fortress, marking a historic moment in the island's history.

CHANIA MUNICIPAL MARKET

The Municipal Market of Chania was built in 1911 under the initiative of Mayor Manolis Mountakis and was officially inaugurated on December 4, 1913, three days after the raising of the Greek flag at Firkas Fortress.

It is located near the main entrance of the old Venetian fortifications and is distinguished by its cross-shaped architectural design.

The market houses a wide variety of shops and businesses and serves as a gathering place for thousands of residents and visitors. As one of the city's busiest landmarks, it is often described as the beating heart of Chania.
