ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
The Archaeological Museum of Chania is housed in the Church of Saint Francis, which was founded in the 14th century.
The museum exhibits important finds from the Late Neolithic Period, the Minoan era, and significant artifacts from historical times. Among the most notable exhibits are clay tablets with Linear Script discovered in Chania, Early Cycladic pottery from caves in the prefecture, Roman mosaic floors, and many others.
A special place in the museum is occupied by the Mitsotakis Collection, which includes Minoan pottery, pithoi (large storage jars), and a sealstone depicting the Minotaur, found in Chania.
WAR MUSEUM
The War Museum was founded in 1992. It is housed in a two-story stone building constructed in 1870.
Its exhibits include weapons and manuscripts belonging to fighters of the Cretan revolutions. Visitors can also see an important collection of banknotes, postage stamps, traditional Cretan costumes, flags, and historical banners.
BYZANTINE MUSEUM
The Byzantine Museum is housed on the site of the former katholikon (main church) of the Franciscan Monastery of San Salvatore, founded in the 15th century.
It displays artifacts from the Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods, originating from excavations carried out throughout the Chania region. Visitors can admire sculptures, icons, coins, frescoes, mosaics, and funerary inscriptions.
HISTORICAL ARCHIVE OF CRETE
The Historical Archive of Crete was founded in 1920 by N. Papadakis.
It contains a rare and exceptionally important collection of approximately 700,000 historical documents dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. These include archival material from the Cretan governments, as well as records relating to the Battle of Crete and the German occupation.
Visitors can also explore the complete archive of the Cretan press from 1831 to the present day, an extensive photographic archive from the early 20th century, and a library containing rare publications dating from 1500 to the present.
The same premises also house the Folklore Archive of P. Vlastos, which consists of 93 handwritten volumes documenting the entirety of Crete's folk traditions.
MARITIME MUSEUM OF CRETE
The Maritime Museum was founded in 1973 and is housed in the Venetian Fortress of Firkas.
Its mission is to promote Greece's maritime heritage. The exhibits cover all historical periods and include ship models and paintings from different eras, scale models depicting naval battles and military events, nautical instruments, and photographs of notable fighters and seafarers.
