Vathi
|
Vathi is the island’s capital from the 16th century and the main port. The settlement is built inside a protected cove, surrounded by green mountains.
The first picture you see as the ship approaches the port, are the traditional houses and the small island of Lazareto with dense vegetation. On the hill over Vathi is a castle built in 1807 by French. The view from up there is breathtaking as you can see up to Lefkada.
In Vathi, near the port’s gulf is the cave of Nymphs. It has multi-coloured stalactites that decorate its interior. According to local tradition, it is the cave where Odysseus hid his presents from Faiakes, when he returned to the island.
Vathi is the epic port of Forkynos. It is a natural port, where according to tradition, Faiakes left Odysseus sleeping.
Worth visiting are the archaeological, folkloric – naval museums and the Metropolis.
Big part of the town was ruined by the 1953 earthquake, but was rebuilt keeping its traditional architecture. If you visit Vathi you will see the residence of Odysseus Androutsos.
Vathi has many hotels and rooms to let providing a comfortable accommodation to all visitors. Here you will find restaurants, taverns and coffeehouses. Bars and clubs are waiting to entertain you.
As for your swim prefer the beaches of Loutsa, Sarakiniko, Tsiribi and Filiatro. Don’t miss taking the boat to Gidaki beach, one of the most idyllic in Ithaki.
