Kavala town

Kavala (673 km) Kavala is an amphitheatrically built city of stunning beauty and amazing views. The city is an important tobacco centre. Discover its numerous charms in old neighbourhoods with tobacco warehouses. Panagia, the old section of the city is dominated by the medieval castle (1425). The surrounding walls were erected in 926 and fortified in 1307.
History
The city is built on the ruins of Neapolis, which existed till the 6th century. Kavala was destroyed by the Goths in 396 AD and suffered repeated raids and looting by various peoples. In the Byzantine period Kavala was referred to as Hristoupolis. In 1387 the Turks seized the city and it was renamed to Kavala during the Ottoman yoke. In 1912 it was occupied by the Bulgarians and was liberated in 1913 by th4e Greek army.
