|
Sikinos’ Chora is built in the northwest part of the island, on the edge of a bold cliff, 300m above the level of the sea and 3,5km from the port.
It is one of the most beautiful and graphic villages in Cyclades islands. It keeps its traditional identity and in the paths of the settlement yesterday and today come across under the volta of well saved houses.
Chora comprises by two neighborhoods, the same beautiful and enchanting. Old stone houses, pavements with colourful flowers, narrow cobblestone pavements, white-washed stairs and white houses create a picture so unreal and at the same time real that you can see only in Cyclades islands.
In the neighborhood of Kastro, with the older houses and graphic cobblestone pavements visit the church of Pantanassa, built in 1787, one of the most important religious monuments in the island. The local tradition says that the icon of Panagia is thaumaturge and that it came to the island from Crete all by itself, like a miracle.
In Village, the second neighborhood of Chora, is located the Folkloric museum roofed under an old olive oil press. On the top of the hill overhangs the monastery of Zoodohos Pigi that looks like an embattled castle. In this, took refuge in inhabitants in order to protect themselves from pirates.
Don’t miss to be photographed in the graphic windmills in the highest spot of Chora. The view from up there is extraordinary.
Around the central square of Chora you will find many taverns, where you will taste recipes from the local cuisine.
