Chora

Chora (Hora) distinguishes for its authentic feature of Cyclades islands. The wild beauty of sceneries along with the architecture of Cyclades make a beautiful and charming combination.
The capital of the island is built almost at the edge of a gigantic rock, in a 200m height above the level of the sea. It is 4km from the island¢s port, Karavostasis.
Chora is one of the most graphic villages of Cyclades islands. It is combined of two settlements. The Medieval settlement built in the walls of the Venetian castle and the newer just outside the walls.
The Castle and its settlement were built during the period of Venetian domination in the beginnings of 13th century by Marcus Sanoudos. One side of the castle is literally hanging over the cliff.
The outside of the houses were the castle¢s walls. After the end of Venetian domination, of pirates and invasions, folkloric architecture triumphed. In peace and calm, locals renovated the medieval settlement, the only one in the island. The small wooden balconies with big white staircases made during the latest years, are samples of the architecture of Cyclades islands. Uniformity of structures, colourful windows, narrow paths and many small churches justify Folegandro¢s fame, as the most representative capital of Cyclades islands.
Gradually, Chora(town) started to extend outside the Castle¢s walls. The new settlement preserved its traditional colour.
Cobblestone paths, white houses and churches, small squares. The entire tradition of Cyclades islands lives here in that small island that enchants its visitors. On the top of the hill, over Chora, is the monastery of Panagia. It was built during the 19th century and distinguishes for its architecture, the marble chancel screen and the belt tower. To reach the monastery, follow a cobblestone path with many bends. Apart from the religious interest, you will be impressed by the glorious view.
In Paleokastro you will see the remains of Apollo¢s ancient temple. From Chora you can reach the beautiful beaches of the island by bus or by your own transport.
Chora is the most developed settlement of the island in tourist foundations. Here you will find hotels and rooms to let, taverns, restaurants and bars for your entertainment. Of course the island is not famous for its vivid nightlife.
But it offers visitors the opportunity to have unforgettable holidays in a beautiful surrounding.
