The archaeological findings in the island show that it is inhabited since prehistoric times.
According to greek mythology, Anafi, came out of the sea after the command of Apollo in order to give refuge to Iasonas and Argonaftes who were in danger by a tremendous storm.
In the hill of Kalamos and close to Panagia’s Kalamiotissas monastery are the remains of an ancient town and Apollo’s temple.
During the 5th century BC Anafi was an ally with Athens.
In 1207 the island is under the domination of Venetians. It was part of Naxo’s Ducat under Marcus Sanoudos. At that time the castle of Chora was built, whose remains are saved until our days.
The island was in the sight of pirates many times and met a lot of catastrophes and plunders.
In 1537 was under the Turkish domination. It took part in the 1821 revolution and attached the Greek Union in 1832.
When Otto was king, many residents left the island. They were the best craftsmen in the country. Otto brought them to the capital to built his palace. They settled in Plaka and created their own neighborhood under Acropolis, Anafiotika, a miniature of their island and an ornament of Athens.
The island keeps its beauty intact and it’s a popular summer destination.
