ISLANDS AROUND ALONISSOS'
|
Small islands with dense vegetation or rocky ground surround Alonissos from the northeast part. In their marine caves find shelter the Mediterranean monk seals and other rare species of birds. You can visit most of these islands by boat. On the way, you will have the chance to see the monk seals lying on the rocks or swimming. Let’s meet some of these small uninhabited islands:
GIOURA: It is located northeast of Alonissos, between the islands of Kyra – Panagia and Psathoura. It is a hilly island, famous for the cave of Cyclops. It is a cave with rich stalactite interior. In order to visit it, you have to be accompanied by a guide.
In this island lives a rare specimen of chamois that looks like the famous Kri – Kri of Crete.
KYRA – PANAGIA (PELAGONISI): It is the biggest from the islands around Alonissos and the only one inhabited. The few residents work with agriculture.
According to a theory, in this island was built the ancient Alonissos. In the east part of the island is located the monastery of Panagia, built during the 18th century.
You will swim in the beautiful beaches of Agios Petros and Planitis, created by the two homonym coves.
PSATHOURA: It an island north of Alonissos. It is so flat that you can hardly distinguish it from the level of the sea. Maybe this is the reason it was chosen to install the island’s lighthouse. In the north part of Alonissos we meet the really small island of Psathouropoula. Between these two small islands were found the remains of an ancient town, probably ancient Alonissos.
SKANTZOURA: This island is situated southeast of Alonissos and is really famous among fishermen. It is surrounded by beautiful beaches, where you can enjoy your bath and relax away from the crowded beaches.
PERISTERA: It is the second in size island, after Kyra – Panagia and the closest to Alonissos. It has two natural ports, Peristeri and Vasiliko, where boats anchor. You can swim in the beaches, famous for their natural beauties and clarity of waters.
PIPERI: It is the most distanced island to Alonissos. It is a small green paradise in the middle of Aegean Sea, where Monachus – Monachus monk seals find shelter.
Here you will see the National Sea Park of Alonissos and North Sporades. Private yachts are not allowed to reach the island, in order to protect the Mediterranean monk seal.
