Palio chorio - chora
|
Palio Chorio or Chora or just Alonissos is the old capital of the island and the oldest settlement.
It is 4km from Patitiri, built on the top of the hill. Many residents of Chora abandoned the settlement after the severe earthquake of 1965 and were transferred to Patitiri, where they built their new capital.
Chora is a live sightseeing. Despite the damages it suffered from the earthquake it never lost its traditional identity.
From time to time life returned to Palio Chorio. Houses were renovated, but kept their traditional architecture. The narrow cobblestone pavements are full of people during summer period. Visitors enjoy a walk in the old neighborhoods and enjoy their coffee or ouzo in the graphic taverns all around Chora.
Worth visiting is the old windmill and churches saved by the earthquake. Like the church of Christ, Saint George, Saint Athanasios and the monasteries of Saints Anargyri and Analypsis.
If you happen to be there on August 15th don’t miss visiting the big festival with traditional music, food, sweets, dances and songs.
