Neorio was the biggest industrial unit in Syros and one of the most important naval refit bases in Greece.
It was created in 1860 by the Hellenic Navigation Company, in the place of the old pest house.
In the years operated it met periods of bloom and decline.
During the first years of its operation, English and French mechanics had the technical management of the factory. Since 1888 the management passed into the hands of Greek mechanics.
In Neorio were made the fire arms used in the insurrection of Crete in 1868-69.
