|
The World Heritage Committee inscribed the Old Town of Corfu on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
The inscription was unanimous after the proposal of the international non-governmental Organization ICOMOS (International Council for Monuments and Sites).
The Old Town of Corfu becomes the 17th Greek site of the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The Old Town of Corfu represents a significant historic period. The architectural remains cover a long period from the Venetian Rule to the 19th century, with most important those of the 16th and the 17th century. According to the sources, in the same area was the Byzantine settlement of the 6th and the 7th BC.
Mr. George Voulgarakis, Minister of Civilization said about this inscription: “We are happy to see that the Old Town of Corfy has been added to the INESCO World Heritage List. This was succeeded after the actuation of the Civilization Ministry and the relative office during the past year.
After this new addition, we all feel a huge responsibility for the best management, protection and presentation of our cultural inheritance, with great restoration programs”.
