Matala became world-famous in the 1970s, when hippies flocked to the area and lived in its renowned caves. It is a region of unique and exceptional beauty, located 67 km southwest of Heraklion.
The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. It is said that the caves served as dwellings for prehistoric humans. Inside some of the caves, Roman-era tombs have been discovered. In antiquity, Matala, together with the nearby settlement of Kommos, served as the port of Phaistos. Archaeological research has also uncovered ancient shipwrecks.
Today, Matala is one of the most visited destinations in the Heraklion region. The picturesque village hosts numerous tourist businesses of all kinds.
