A coastal settlement located very close to the city of Heraklion, just 7 km from the center.
The area has been inhabited since ancient times. The ancient city of the same name was an important center of the Minoan civilization. Excavations have uncovered the ruins of a Minoan villa.
In Amnissos, you can also visit the famous Cave of Eileithyia, the goddess of motherhood. The cave was a place of worship, and at its entrance lies the Square of the Altars, which served as the residence of the priests. Its interior features rich stalagmitic formations.
Amnissos¢ vast sandy beach is well organized and its shallow waters make it ideal for young children.
