ABOUT PELLA
The prefecture of Pella has a lot of natural beauties and remarkable archaeological monuments. The capital of the prefecture, Edessa, famous for its waterfalls, is built on the foot of Vermio in a green environment and abudant waters. It is in a distance of about 560 km. from Athens and about 90 km. from Thessaloniki. Edessa was one of the most important cities of ancient Macedonia and has great historical and archaeological interest. In the place of the today’s city it was the acropole of ancient Edessa, as it is shown by archaeological findings and the wall dated back to the classical and hellenistic period. In the centre of the town you will see the stone tower with the six clocks, while you can also visit the ancient city in Loggos where they have been discovered parts of hellenistic and roman wall, foundations of houses and other buildings from the 4th B.C. century till the Firstchristianity period, as well as three big churches of first chritianity period in style bassilica and the monastery of Aghia Triada established in 1865. You can also visit the stone arched bridge in the location Kioumbri built in the Roman or Byzantine period, the Archaeological Museum with reliefs, inscriptions and architectural parts of the region of Edessa, the hydroelectrical unit of Public Electricity Corp., and the public hatchery station out of the city. The town is crossed through by the river Edessaeos or Vodas forming small and big waterfalls. The Park of the Waterfalls is situated in the edge of a precipice where two tributaries of Edessaeos (Vodas) are met. To the right side of the park it is the traditional settlement Varossi with historical buildings as the School for girls built in 1877, the byzantine church of Kimisi Theotokos (Assumption of Virgin Mary) of the 14th century, the Popular Art Museum, the outdoors Museum of Water with mills operating, the region "Psilos Vrahos" with unlimited view. Arnissa is situated in a picturesque environment, built in a low hillside of Kaimaktsalan, in front of the lake Vegoritida where you can swim too. It is in a distance of 27 km. from Edessa and 19 km. from the ski centre. It is worthwhile to visit the old village Aghios Athanassios, 14 km. north of Arnissa as well as the ski centre in the location "Kaimaktsalan". The village is ideal for walking, climbing, winter sports, glider, whereas in summer you can enjoy sailing, rowing, sea ski in the fascinating lake of Vegoritida. The Ski Centre is in the south-eastern side of the mountain Voras in the location "Kaimaktsalan", in an altitude of 2.050-2.480 m. It has 14 tracks of which 2 are of races, ski training center, shops of ski equipment, information office, chalet with restaurant, cafeteria, parking.
