In prehistoric times Antiparos was piece with Paros.
According to historic sources, the island is inhabited since Neolithic times.
In the very small island Saliagos, near Antiparos’ port, the archaeological findings brought into light the remains of a neolithic settlement dated to the 4000BC.
In archaic times the island was named Oliaros.
Its historic route coincides with that of Paros.
During the 13th century it was renamed to Antiparos. In Byzantine times the island was in the sight of pirates. It suffered a lot of invasions and plunders that contributed to its desolation.
When Cyclades islands came in the hands of Venetians, Antiparos, as Paros, was part of Naxos’ Ducat. Venetians built Kastro in order to protect the island from pirates and invaders. In the middle of 16th century Turkish conquered the island.
For a small period of time the island was under the domination of Russians (1770-74). Antiparos took part in the Revolution of 1821. It was adjusted to Greece as all Cyclades islands with the Convention of London.
